M1.2 Project
This research explored how flexible 3D printed lattice structures behave under different interactions, pushing, bending, shearing, and twisting, and how to select the right structure for each. Based on mechanical performance and human perception.
The work combined mechanical strength testing with user evaluation. I designed and ran test setups for each movement. Using TPMS and honeycomb classified lattices, iterating the rigs with expert input, then evaluated how people perceived and interacted with the same structures. Comparing the two revealed that perception and mechanics often diverge.
These findings shaped a toolkit that guides designers in choosing a lattice for an intended interaction, weighing measured force thresholds against how users expect a structure to behave, so artefacts can be made without added components or assembly.
